Magpie Entry #11

Song: "Puttin' On My Top Hat"

(With belated and somewhat insincere apologies to Irving Berlin)

The message was clear: “Your presence tonight, it’s formal.” I knew what that meant: a top hat, white tie and cane.

[CHORUS]
I’m puttin’ on my top hat,
Tyin’ up my white tie,
Dustin’ off my cane.
Gotta dude my shirt front,
Put in all the shirt studs,
Check that weathervane!
I’m steppin’ out, my dear,
To breathe an atmosphere
That simply reeks with class.
And I have to trust
You’ll excuse my dust
When I step on the gas!
For I’ll be there
Puttin’ down my top hat,
Mussin’ up my white tie,
Twirlin’ with my cane!

I love this song, and I love the Astair/Rogers film. I'll be humming this to myself all night long.

I got to download this song. I keep getting mixed up with the Fred Astaire classic "Puttin' On The Ritz". I love Irving Berlin! I would love to go out on the town with you Berowne! But you didnt ask!

I enjoyed this very much. We were watching the dancing stars show this week and they had a bit with top hats, tails, and taps. I, however, could not get Peter Boyle as Frankenstein's monster out of my head. Hee hee.

I can hear the tap shoes now...

Every time I hear this I always think of the section in 'Young Frankenstein' with the monster and Gene Wilder. Cracks me up.

"Topper" -- another classic film from the past. :-)

I'm all for it. But I have to confess: I don't have a top hat. Would a reversed baseball cap be okay? :-)

My thanx to Dedene, Peggy Jo, mothersparrow, ds, Chhaya, Mme DeFarge and Derrick for their encouraging comments.

I wondered what that odor was. :-)

Very well illustrates the pictures, Berowne.

Berowne, that song popped into my head the minute I saw the prompt. But I resisted. I'm glad you didn't!

OMG dear Berowne This is just up your alley. I picture you so suave and debonair. Love that song and dance routine. HH and I can't tap but we could sure cut a mean rug in our day to tunes such as that. Great job. I would feel beautiful on your arm with that hat and cane.

Well here in the North West even the governor wears jeans as formal attire,,, so you would fit right in reversed baseball cap and the cane and off we go dancing the night away....a happy lyric -- made my day, although I confess I would love to dress up like Ginger wonder how that would look?

It worked for her; no reason why it shouldn't work for you. :-)

Though unfortunately often forcibly escorted out because of an inability to pay the bill. :-)

Top hat and cane. Every man should have one.

You have with your post ... made me want to raid my closet, find a flirty/swingy dress, pull out my dancing shoes and go find a dreamy partner!
