For Sunday Scribblings and ABC Wednesday

“F” is for “Fish”

For those of us who belong to an older generation, today’s popular music is often difficult to appreciate. It doesn’t always seem to make sense.

How different, then, is an old song I heard recently on the radio. Way back in the late 1930s it was the top hit of the land, primarily because of its touching, beautifully nuanced lyrics, very unlike so much of the “music” of today. It was sung by the Andrews Sisters, whom you may have heard of because of their careers in grand opera.

With this song, the Andrews Sisters, aided by their muse, were able to bring out overtones of tenderness and sadness, of serenity and tranquility, as well as of deep psychological understanding.

Join with me now as we study their unforgettable lyric:

Hold tight, hold tight,
Foo-da-yacka-saki,
Want some sea food, Mama?

I like oysters, lobsters too,
And I like my tasty buttered fish, foo!
When I come home late at night
I. Get. My. Fav. Or. Ite. Dish:
FISH!!!

Hold tight, hold tight,
Foo-da-yacka-saki,
Want some seafood, Mama?

They just don’t write songs like that any more. :-)

I remember hearing this song when I was a kid but haven't thought of it since, nor about its deep psychological meaning, its impact internationally, its contribution to creativity worldwide, nor even its serenity and tranquility. Silly me.
My father was a musician in the 40s and 50s. He loved to introduce us to all the songs, and he also loved to fish. Thanks for posting this!

I don't know about the Andrews Sisters nor the Fish song but I agree with the kind of song then and now.

First Grade's Fees is what I have for ABC this week.

Three little fishies in a itty bitty poo
...and they swam and they swam
right over the dam!

I totally loved "Hold Tight," have the Andrews Sisters Christmas collection with Bing and that good Jewish boy, Danny Kaye (and Barbra thought she was the first to put out a Christmas album, LOL).

I didn't notice the "fun" part of the prompt, so this is not going to be fun. I'm just saying. Amy

The things that come before the fish are usually the appetizers. :-)

Perhaps following it with rum and coca cola. What luscious harmonies they made.

Andrew Sisters... the personification of FUN. I hadn't heard this song and couldn't find it on YouTube... but did find another FISH song of theirs. It's the one Amy quotes.

Had to go and find a video on youtube! Those sisters look fishy, but their music is very jazzy and very...funny too!

Can you guess what school kids sing these days? I was at the school's seniors speech competition, and to ease the boredom of waiting, they sang a fe w songs. The first one was about the kid of food a dog was given, like 3 day off pizza.

Francisca: "Couldn't find it on YouTube."
It's there; look for it under Andrews Sisters "Hold Tight."

So true that they don't write songs like this any more. LOL. I don't know the one you quoted, but they have written some gems!

I read down from the intriguing umbrella story and found this! Oh yes, the Andrews Sisters. But Grand Opera??? Haha! And as for lyrics, remember Mairzy Doats? Beats the hell out of the Sex Pistols.
