(Also submitted to ABC Wednesday and Magpie 86)
"M" is for "Monarch"
Finally – the news came with this morning’s paper.
I prepared to sit down to breakfast. My Ovaltine was at the ready, steaming hot and inviting.
(I gave up coffee some time back; trying to follow the current economic and political situation has just been too nerve-wracking.)
There could no longer be questions, arguments, accusations, disputes. The major question of the day had been answered and the answer was right there in the paper.
My political party, after months of submitting a seemingly endless list of potential candidates for the office of the Presidency – ranging from the barely acceptable through border-line deplorable, right on down to flat-out objectionable – had cut the Gordian knot and solved the problem.
It was an astonishing piece of news. Their decision: the person to be chosen at the next nominating convention would not be just someone people admire; the candidate would be something they desperately need:
A King.
After being nominated at the convention, our democratically-elected Monarch would be greeted everywhere throughout the land with great enthusiasm and with a cry similar to the one that has greeted royalty through the centuries:
“Vive le Roi des Etats-Unis! Vive le Roi!”

An excellent solution to a tricky prompt.
I'm still floundering.
Now where have I heard that before?!
Everyone is going dark humor on this one.
oh ho! The Ovaltine Party? LOL
Brilliant!
love the take! :-)

Yes, it is all very depressing. And exasperating.
Wonderful reading.
Kristen H: "Wonderful reading."
Wonderful comment. Thanks.
Deborah: "Brilliant!" JJRod'z: "Love the take!"
Truly generous responses; thanks.
I think you have some answers here Sir Berowne
I hadn't thought of Ovaltine in years.
Seriously, I thought Ronald Reagan should have been king - avuncular, optimistic.
Nobody we have elected is fit for Kingship!
Sad but true. Thanks for the spin!
Long live the king!
"ranging from the barely acceptable through border-line deplorable"
Well, that pretty much covers things here in the US.
Dear Berowne: When bi-partisanship isn't working, and things are at a fillibuster monarchy may give it the old heave-ho? Chiccoreal
ah yes ....could we make that work? Hmmm-while speaking French we could bring back Madame Guillotine just in case....
a king...we have been crying for one for generations...and perhaps now stand on the threshold of getting just what we want..i wonder will we just cry louder after...
Wonderful take on the prompt. I enjoyed your descriptions of the current state.
Roger O G: "Seriously, I thought Ronald Reagan should have been king - avuncular..."
No. Reagan should have been National Uncle. :-)
Isabel D: "I think you have some answers here, Sir Berowne.
Please, no. I rarely use my title here. :-)
Kathe W: "We could bring back Madame Guillotine just in case."
A sharp suggestion... :-)
Rog: "I hadn't thought of Ovaltine in years."
You should all think of Ovaltine from time to time. You don't have to actually drink it; just think about it. :-)
Bye bye Tea Party (a royal pain) here comes the Ovaltine Party..how retro can that be?? Fun piece, of course!
If YOU run, you'll have my vote!!!!
Loved this tale coupled with the image of the tiny king.
I'm fascinated by your comment on my blog...bullets flying, no orders. Frightening!
Clever write- and the comments are almost as entertaining as the piece itself!
Heen: "If YOU run, you'll have my vote!!!!"
Thanks, but I'm not running, I'm voting for Palin.
Michael, that is. :-)
Kate: "The comments are almost as entertaining as the piece itself!"
A woman of taste and discernment. :-)
Here on the north side of our border, let me note that it's always interested me when Americans remark on Canada's monarchy, when there is so evidently a dynastic penchant running strong on your southern side. So your post rings true! With a delightful French twist at the end.
Tres drole.
spacedlaw: "Tres drole."
Muchas gracias. :-)
Kathy B: "There is so evidently a dynastic penchant running strong on your southern side."
A dynastic penchant is about the only thing that's NOT running. :-)
How scary ... but so is what we are experiencing now. The relief we cry out for could come wearing a crown I suppose; but we so love the Santa suit and all the toys we have come to expect. Good response to the prompt.
If monarchy is better than what is the government ruling now go for it. ^_^

That Ovaltine has gone to your head. Americans faced with a king are more likely to say "off with his head"! :o)

I would write "LOL" but unfortunately it really isn't funny anymore. While in jest, I do think there's something seriously wrong with our political system and while a democratically elected king is WAY TOO CLOSE to what we have now, we do need some critical changes.
Still, GREAT post ...with teeth!!!
Deliciously dark humour.
Meryl: "GREAT post ...with teeth!!!"
Al dente?
Long live LeRoy? Yeah, I'll vote for the other party.
Great use of three words. I hope you'll check out my attempt.
Brilliant!
Anna :o]
Great post, I would vote for Michael Palin as well, maybe John Cleese as Vice-President?. The situation here in Ireland isn't much better. Nice to be back to Magpies, I took a break to write a screenplay.
Alice A, HyperCRPTICal and Brigid -- thanx for the kind words.
“Vive le Roi des Etats-Unis! Vive le Roi!”
Amen!
Well told!
Interesting post and some amusing comments
Brilliantly-worded. Well-told. My 3WW: http://verseinanutshell.wordpress.com/2011/10/12/believe/
You do have a serious point here. The Brits have had the unifying power of a king/queen for centuries, above politics and with an ear for the common man. But again, like the Brits have had to do from time to time, you might need to import one.
I suggest someone from a Chinese royal line who might manage to do what most such monarchs were meant to do, ie, bring their respective countries closer. King 'Wok Yu Wan' of America has a ring to it. Now there is an idea! A name competition for the first Chines born King of America.
'Yuan Me' or 'Yu Wan Lon', or
Excellent!
wonderful! It had to come to that one day..so the world turns around!
That'd be a sight to see, wouldn't it? A democratically elected monarch... wait, I think, in some ways, we do have that now as well!
Cheers,
